Conscious Sedation / Happy Air

Conscious Sedation is a form of subtle sedation induced by using laughing gas or ‘Happy Air’. The scientific term for the “Happy Air” is “Nitrous Oxide”.

Nitrous Oxide is a friendly gas that helps to create a dissociation effect on an individual. It does not put children to sleep unless they fall asleep as they feel relaxed or in situations where they have come tired to the appointment.

“Conscious Sedation” in itself means sedated but conscious and awake. The distraction caused by Nitrous Oxide can help children feel more calm and composed during the treatment.

Not all the kids would need this sedation. Its suggested when children are anxious, apprehensive, fearful and in very young age group.

Most important instruction for Laughing gas to induce calming effect is to Deep Breathe. With Calm Chair Breathing Rituals, children are guided into deep breathing both before and during the treatment.

Laughing gas is of great use during extensive treatments such as root canals, soft tissue surgeries or multiple teeth fillings in one appointment. .

In cases of extreme anxiety, we do our best to accomplish procedure under Conscious Sedation, but in case children are unable to cope and follow instructions, further modes of sedation are then discussed based on the extent, severity and urgency of treatment.
