Anchoring in pediatric dentistry turns a small token into a lasting memory. Gifts and rewards are appreciated by everyone, and children are no exception.
Rewarding the effort
When children follow instructions and cope well during treatment, they are rewarded at the end. Praise, applause, hugs and photographs all create a beautiful memory of the visit.
Besides these intangible gestures, tangible keepsakes add lifetime impact. A small gift delights a child, because it marks a genuine achievement.
What anchoring actually means
In neurolinguistic programming, rooting an experience to a reward, sign or gesture is called anchoring.
Anchoring associates an internal response with an external or internal trigger. The response can then be re-accessed quickly, and sometimes covertly, whenever it is needed again.
Where the gift should go
When the gift is offered at the close of the appointment, the child is told to place it somewhere visible. A desk or shelf works well, so it stays obvious to their eyes.
The object then serves as a reminder. It recalls their brave attempt, their good listening and their victory over fear.
Why it keeps working
Whenever a child needs that reminder of who they are, they can hold the gift. Doing so returns them mentally to a state of confidence, achievement and success.
With those emotions in the foreground, they feel ready for the next challenge. That challenge need not be dental at all.
Anchoring in pediatric dentistry, through verbal compliments, rewards and keepsakes, is one of the most practised NLP techniques. It helps instil a positive dental attitude for life. See also NLP in pediatric dentistry and behaviour modification.
Behaviour guidance of this kind is endorsed by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry.
