A first dental visit sets the tone for every appointment that follows. The protocol is simple, and it is designed around the child’s age rather than the dentist’s checklist.
What happens at the appointment
The visit begins with a complete check-up. Dr. Imneet counts the teeth present, notes those that have fallen out, and assesses permanent teeth coming through.
Attention then turns to the health of teeth and gums. Oral hygiene at home, dietary guidance and the parent’s role in brushing are all discussed.
When radiographs are taken
After the clinical check, radiographs are usually ideal. The protocol is straightforward:
- Diagnostic X-rays around age six, when the first molars arrive
- Diagnostic X-rays earlier if decay is clinically obvious
- Diagnostic X-rays if the last set was taken more than eighteen to twenty-four months ago
- A panoramic X-ray at roughly six, seven or eight years, depending on growth and eruption
The panoramic view shows the status of permanent teeth still inside the jaw. Consequently problems can be anticipated rather than discovered late.
“They will fall out anyway”
Parents often ask whether treating primary teeth is really necessary. It is a fair question, and it deserves a full answer.
Four things are discussed before any plan is agreed:
- Eruption status of the primary teeth for the child’s age
- How long the affected teeth will remain in the mouth
- The extent of the decay
- Treatment possibilities, from fillings through to root canal treatment
Because timing changes everything, the same cavity can warrant different treatment in two different children.
How to prepare your child
Keep the language neutral and light. Avoid words such as pain, needle, injection or drill, even when reassuring. Children hear the word, not the reassurance.
