Lasers in Dentistry – Does the laser really work differently?

Dental lasers have existed for four to five decades. Only in recent years, though, have they become mainstream. This is what they actually do differently.

Why they are still uncommon

Using dental lasers requires specialist knowledge and skill. Besides training, the device itself is a substantial investment. Therefore many practices still do not offer them.

Dr. Imneet completed her Masters in laser education in 2013. Since then, Erbium and Diode lasers have been her daily tools. In other words, this is routine work rather than an occasional extra.

How a laser removes decay

A laser is light and water. It splashes onto the tooth and removes decay, without ever touching the tooth surface. Because there is no contact, there is no pressure sensation. That is why most children need no injection.

That single fact removes the need for numbing in most cases. As a result, multiple teeth on different sides of the mouth can be treated in one visit. There is also no risk of the traumatic lip bites that often follow anaesthesia.

Dental lasers in root canal treatment

For root canals, lasers have been a genuine advance. Completing a root canal without numbing a child for the next three or four hours changes the whole experience.

The approach is slower. However, cooperation stays high throughout, which matters far more with a child.

Are lasers safe around the mouth?

Parents often picture sci-fi beams travelling everywhere. In reality, though, the absorption medium sits within the tooth itself. Thus scattering is contained and the surrounding tissue stays protected.

Better bonding and better disinfection

Erbium lasers sterilise the tooth base and clear the debris layer thoroughly. Consequently the bond between tooth and filling material is stronger, and fillings last longer.

Both Erbium and Diode lasers disinfect root canal walls, each by its own mechanism. This helps achieve success with infected baby teeth, including those with long-standing swellings or abscesses.

Without lasers, such teeth are usually extracted and replaced with spacers. Yet keeping the natural tooth until it exfoliates is always the ideal. See how this fits into laser dentistry for children. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry offers further background for parents.
