A child dental emergency frightens parents as much as children. Toothache, swelling, a broken tooth or a knocked-out tooth all need calm, quick handling. Dr. Imneet Madan treats fear first and pain second.
What counts as a child dental emergency
- Severe or persistent toothache
- Facial or gum swelling
- A broken or chipped tooth
- A knocked-out tooth
- Infection or visible pus
- Injury after a fall or sports knock
If any of these appear, call straight away. Swelling in particular should never wait, because infection can spread quickly.
Fear first, then pain
The Calm Chair Method™ turns emergency care into a composed experience. From the moment a child arrives, the focus falls on emotional regulation, clear communication and gentle handling.
That calm is not decoration. A panicking child cannot be examined properly. Therefore settling them is the fastest route to treating them.
How emergencies are treated
Trauma, severe toothache, swelling, infection and broken teeth are all managed with minimally invasive, evidence-based techniques. Wherever possible Dr. Imneet uses laser dentistry, no-needle approaches and rapid pain-relief protocols.
Time is respected but never rushed. Each step is explained in simple, calming language, so trust builds even under pressure. Parents stay involved in decision-making throughout.
Where a tooth has been knocked out or broken, see our guidance on dental trauma in children for what to do in the first hour.
General first-aid advice for dental injuries is also published by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry.
What to do before you arrive
A few simple steps help while you travel in. Keep the child upright and calm, since lying flat can increase throbbing pain.
For swelling, a cold compress on the outside of the cheek gives relief. Avoid placing aspirin or any tablet directly against the gum, because it burns the tissue.
If a permanent tooth has come out whole, handle it by the crown only. Keep it in milk and bring it with you immediately.
