Primary teeth decay does not automatically doom the permanent teeth. The two are connected, but they are not directly proportional.
How common it is
Research indicates the incidence of decay in primary teeth sits around eighty to eighty-five percent. Moreover, cavities between the two baby molars account for most of it, since those surfaces touch tightly and hide food.
Three habits drive that figure:
- Improper, unsupervised brushing
- Little or no flossing
- Frequent snacking
Treating what is found
Once Dr. Imneet diagnoses the cavities, the clinical and radiographic picture guides treatment. That may mean fillings, or pulp therapy where the decay runs deeper.
Treatment alone does not end the matter, though. In fact, what happens afterwards decides the long-term outcome. Because new decay can start at any time, monitoring matters as much as the filling itself.
The maintenance protocol
After treatment, book check and prevention appointments every four to six months. Alongside those, daily habits need constant reinforcement:
- Parent-guided and assisted brushing
- Regular flossing
- Detailed dietary guidance
- Controlled snacking
With every preventive and treatment factor in place, we can stabilise primary teeth decay. Consequently the mouth becomes a healthy environment for erupting permanent teeth.
What we cannot control
Certain anatomical, physiological and genetic factors remain beyond our influence. Even so, significant change follows once we tackle the factors we can control. For example, supervised brushing alone shifts the outcome considerably.
Once we treat and resolve the concerns of the primary dentition, the permanent teeth stand a far better chance. Our guide on how baby teeth affect permanent teeth explains the mechanism behind that link.
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends exactly this kind of preventive scheduling.
