Understanding Children’s Behavior

Child behaviour at the dentist is rarely the whole story. Understanding it means looking well past the surface.

Peeling the layers

Behaviour seems to many exactly as it appears. NLP, however, helps us peel back layers, much like the layers of an onion.

The real truth lies beneath the surface. Therefore the deeper layers are where understanding actually happens.

The iceberg model

The NLP iceberg model explains the psychology behind a behaviour pattern. Our conscious mind accounts for only around ten percent of the whole brain system.

The remaining ninety percent sits in the subconscious. Everything gathered from social media, books, conversations, visual experiences, past beliefs and past experiences is embedded there. That is the true origin of how we behave, think, speak and act.

Reading fear, resistance and anger

When child behaviour at the dentist presents as fear with resistance and anger, the past beliefs behind it matter. Framing the right statements, directions and questions can surface the information needed to build rapport.

Once comfortable rapport exists, children connect better. As a result, they follow instructions far more genuinely.

Compassion instead of judgement

The iceberg model broadens our filters and opens a compassionate front. We begin to see negative behaviour as the product of depleted emotions.

Instead of addressing surface behaviour alone, we explain, talk and reassure in order to reach the real emotion underneath.

NLP also advises against rapid conclusions. Its wisdom works at a slower pace, which allows deep breathing for both practitioner and child. We listen to the details, feel the emotion, observe the behaviour, and only then decide what will work.

Different children, different routes

Some children cope well after a calm, understanding conversation. Others may need nitrous oxide conscious sedation. A few will still require treatment under general anaesthesia.

Reading child behaviour at the dentist accurately builds relationships that last. The human heart craves love, acknowledgement and genuine care. NLP lowers our guard of ego and prejudice, so we can see the real person behind the visible and invisible layers. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry treats behaviour guidance as fundamental.
