I am OK, you are OK

Transactional analysis in dentistry explains what happens between dentist, parent and child. Get that exchange right, and treatment starts on a positive note.

The pedodontic triangle

Pediatric dentistry rests on three cornerstones: the child, the dentist and the parent. Together, therefore, they form what is known as the pedodontic triangle.

The child sits at the top, because the child is the priority in every conversation. After that, treatment is explained in detail to parents. For instance, schematic drawings, videos, three-dimensional models and literature are all used.

The same information is given to the child as well, in age-appropriate vocabulary.

Where misunderstandings begin

Whenever several conversations run in parallel, confusion becomes possible. Misunderstandings usually arise for predictable reasons:

  • Missed information
  • Poor coordination between two people
  • Clashes in energy exchange
  • A simple lack of rapport

I am OK, you are OK

NLP offers a simple idea that resolves most of this. Nobody is right or wrong in a given situation.

Each person holds their own perspective, shaped by core values, past experiences, beliefs and socio-demographic differences. Because we see the world through our filters, we expect others to behave according to them. In reality, though, everyone acts from their own conditioning.

When parents have many questions

Parents sometimes ask repeated questions. For example, they may express mistrust, or disagree about treatment plans, costs or how the appointment is proceeding.

However, a calm dentist with an understanding of human psychology defuses this. Because parents are genuinely concerned about their child, every question deserves a warm answer rather than being taken personally.

Being clear about cost and change

Since costs are involved, the treatment plan should be explained fully at the consultation. If the plan might change, say so beforehand rather than mid-treatment.

In addition, parents should feel free to gather information, read, reflect and even seek a second opinion. That openness signals care and responsibility.

Transactional analysis in dentistry ultimately keeps the energy exchange neutral. That neutrality is essential for treatment to begin well and continue smoothly. See also understanding children’s behaviour and behaviour modification.

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry likewise emphasises shared decision-making with families.
